About Al Thumama Stadium

On December 10, 2022, a continent held its breath inside Al Thumama Stadium. Morocco were 1-0 up on Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo was throwing everything at them, and when the final whistle blew Morocco had become the first African and first Arab nation ever to reach a World Cup semi-final. The 44,198 in the stands, and millions more across the Arab world, lost their minds. For a stadium shaped like a cap worn right across that world, it was the perfect place for it to happen.

Al Thumama sits in the district of the same name in southern Doha, about 12 kilometres (7 miles) from the city centre and barely 6 kilometres from Hamad International Airport. That made it the easiest venue to reach for anyone flying in. The building is modelled on the gahfiya, the woven cap worn by men and boys across the Arab and Islamic world, and the resemblance is unmistakable: a low circular drum wrapped in a perforated white facade that catches the light.

The design is the work of Qatari architect Ibrahim Jaidah, of the Arab Engineering Bureau, and it is the most personal of the Qatar 2022 concepts. Jaidah picked the gahfiya deliberately, as a symbol that belongs to the whole region rather than to Qatar alone. The diamond-shaped perforations in the facade echo the cap’s weave while shading the bowl and letting air move through it. A 50,000-square-metre park wraps the stadium, watered in part by recycled supply.

After the tournament Al Thumama is taking an unusual second life. The upper tier is being rebuilt into a 60-room boutique hotel overlooking the pitch, alongside a branch of the Aspetar sports medicine clinic, while capacity drops toward 20,000 for Al-Arabi SC. A cap-shaped stadium with a hotel in the stands is about as Qatari a legacy as the tournament produced.

Getting to Al Thumama Stadium

Public Transit

Al Thumama is not directly on a metro line, so the train only gets you partway.

→ From central Doha: Ride the Red Line south toward the airport and switch to an event-day shuttle for the final stretch, or take a Stadium Express bus straight from points around the city, around 25-30 minutes.

→ Near the airport: The stadium’s position close to Hamad International makes it an easy add-on for fans arriving for a single match, often without ever heading into central Doha.

Because there is no station right at the gates, the post-match flow leans on buses and shuttles. Give it a little time and the queues thin out.

Driving + Parking

The stadium is reached from central Doha along the G Ring Road and Al Matar Street, heading south toward the airport.

→ From central Doha (~12 km): Head south on the G Ring Road, about 15-20 minutes outside peak traffic.

→ From the airport (~6 km): A short hop north from Hamad International, under 10 minutes by car.

There is park-and-ride for big matches, and the stadium’s location away from the dense city core makes parking less of a headache here than at the central venues. For a regular Al-Arabi SC fixture, driving is the obvious choice.

Rideshare

Uber, Careem, and the metered Karwa taxis all serve the area, and the airport proximity means cars are usually plentiful. Expect surge pricing and a wait right after a sold-out match, as everyone leaves at once.

Pro tip: Because the airport is so close, drop-off and pickup are well drilled here. Walk a short way from the gates toward the main road to shorten your wait for a car.

From the Airport

→ Hamad International Airport (DOH): About 6 km (4 mi) north, under 10 minutes by car. No venue was closer to the airport, so a quick taxi or rideshare drops you almost at the gates.

→ Straight off a flight: Several fans during the tournament went from landing to their seats in well under an hour, taking advantage of the short hop.

The 2022 World Cup at Al Thumama Stadium

Al Thumama hosted eight matches, building from group games to a quarter-final, and it staged one of the defining moments of the whole tournament.

Morocco’s history: On December 10, Morocco met Portugal in the quarter-final. Youssef En-Nesyri rose above everyone to head the only goal, and Morocco held on to become the first African and first Arab nation to reach a World Cup semi-final. The reaction, inside the stadium and across the region, was unlike anything else at Qatar 2022.

Spain’s statement: Earlier, in the group stage, Spain demolished Costa Rica 7-0 here, one of the heaviest wins of the tournament. France also came through in the Round of 16, beating Poland 3-1 on the way to the final.

A Moroccan home: Al Thumama almost became Morocco’s adopted home ground before the quarter-final. They had already beaten Belgium 2-0 here in the group stage, in front of a crowd overwhelmingly behind them, so by the time Portugal arrived the building felt like Casablanca-on-the-Gulf. The stadium also staged the tournament’s most politically charged group decider, the United States beating Iran 1-0 to go through, as well as the Netherlands’ opening win over Senegal.

The setting: Lit at night, the perforated cap-shaped facade made for one of the more distinctive backdrops of the tournament. The stadium’s calm, low profile belied the noise inside it on Morocco’s night.

Construction & Design

Most World Cup stadiums chase scale. Al Thumama chased meaning. Ibrahim Jaidah, the Qatari architect behind it, built the entire design around the gahfiya, the simple woven cap worn by men and boys across the Arab and Islamic world. It is a humble object, worn under the headdress, and choosing it as the model for a 44,000-seat stadium was a deliberate statement: a symbol that belongs to the whole region, not just to Qatar.

The execution is careful. The circular facade is wrapped in a white skin punctured with diamond-shaped openings that form larger rhombic patterns, exactly the way the cap’s weave builds up from small repeated stitches. Those perforations are not only decorative. They shade the seating bowl and let air move through it, which matters in the Gulf heat. Inside, a partial canopy covers the stands while leaving the pitch open, and an advanced cooling system handles the rest.

The build leaned hard on sustainability. The project saved roughly 40 percent more fresh water than a conventional stadium, and recycled water keeps the surrounding 50,000-square-metre park green. That earned a five-star rating under Qatar’s Global Sustainability Assessment System. Engineering came from Schlaich Bergermann Partner and Thornton Tomasetti, with construction by a joint venture of Al Jaber Engineering and Turkey’s Tekfen.

The stadium opened in October 2021, and from the start the plan was to shrink it afterward. Rather than simply pull seats, Qatar chose to rebuild the upper tier into a boutique hotel and a sports clinic, turning a tournament venue into a working piece of the neighbourhood.

History of Al Thumama Stadium

Al Thumama was a new venue built specifically for the 2022 World Cup, but its design reached back centuries for its reference, drawing on a piece of clothing worn across the Arab world for generations.

  • Design unveiled (2017): Architect Ibrahim Jaidah revealed the gahfiya concept, which drew attention immediately for rooting a stadium in everyday Arab dress.
  • Official opening (October 22, 2021): Al Thumama hosted the Amir Cup final, its first major match, roughly a year before the World Cup.
  • World Cup quarter-final (December 10, 2022): Morocco beat Portugal 1-0 to reach the semi-finals, the first African and Arab nation to do so, in front of 44,198.
  • Asian Cup (2024): The stadium hosted matches at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, held in early 2024, as Qatar retained their continental crown.

Since the tournament, the conversion of the upper stand into a hotel and clinic has begun, and the venue has settled into legacy life as a home for Al-Arabi SC, still wearing the shape of a cap on the southern edge of Doha.
