About Target Field
Target Field sits in the Warehouse District of downtown Minneapolis โ a 39,504-seat ballpark where the Minnesota Twins play baseball, where a living wall of 5,700 juniper plants serves as the batterโs eye, and where the Minneapolis skyline fills the view beyond the outfield like a backdrop the architects deliberately framed.
The $390 million ballpark, designed by Populous and HGA Architects, opened on April 12, 2010 โ returning the Twins to outdoor baseball after 28 years in the enclosed Metrodome. Funded in part by a Hennepin County sales tax and $152.4 million in private financing from the Twins, the project rose on a downtown site adjacent to what became Target Field Station, a purpose-built intermodal transit hub. The METRO Blue Line connects directly from MSP Airport in 30 minutes โ making this one of the most accessible ballparks in the sport.
Target Field was the first MLB stadium to earn three levels of LEED certification โ Silver for new construction, Gold for operations, and Platinum under the updated system. Its rainwater recycling system has captured and reused nearly 20 million gallons. The cantilevered canopy extends 90 feet at each end of the upper deck, sheltering fans from rain and snow without obstructing the skyline views that defined the design from the start. The 2019 addition of MLBโs first living-wall batterโs eye โ 2,280 square feet and 5,700-plus sea green juniper plants โ added another environmental signature that doubles as a functional backdrop for hitters.
The ballpark has hosted the 2014 All-Star Game, the 2022 NHL Winter Classic, and ALDS playoff series, though the Twinsโ postseason history here has been mostly painful. The 2023 Wild Card sweep of the Blue Jays snapped a record 18-game postseason losing streak โ and finally gave Target Field a winning October memory.

History of Target Field
Target Field was built to bring the Twins back outdoors after 28 seasons in the Metrodome. The $390 million project broke ground on August 30, 2007 โ delayed from the originally planned August 2 ceremony after the I-35W bridge collapsed the day before, killing 13 people and shaking the city.
First Game (April 12, 2010): The Twins defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-2 before a sellout crowd in the ballparkโs regular-season debut. The return to outdoor baseball โ with the Minneapolis skyline framed beyond center field โ was everything fans had waited three decades for.
2014 MLB All-Star Game (July 15, 2014): The American League defeated the National League 5-3. It was the third All-Star Game in Twin Cities history and the first at an outdoor venue in Minneapolis.
2022 NHL Winter Classic (January 1, 2022): The St. Louis Blues defeated the Minnesota Wild 6-4 before 38,619 fans, with Thomas Rhett performing in -5ยฐF weather. Target Field proved it could handle January in Minnesota โ and that the ballpark works for more than baseball.
2023 AL Wild Card Series (October 3โ4, 2023): The Twins swept the Blue Jays in two games, snapping a record 18-game postseason losing streak dating back to 2004. The 38,518 fans at Game 2 witnessed the franchiseโs first playoff victory in 19 years โ Royce Lewisโs go-ahead home run sealing it in a 2-0 win that shook the Warehouse District.
From the living wall to the skyline views to the light rail at the gate, Target Field is where Minnesota baseball came back outside โ a ballpark that earned the sportโs highest environmental certification and gave a franchise its identity back.
